CII Virtual Session on Smart Factory to improve manufacturing agility by the digitization of design and manufacturing exclusively for HAL’s MiG Complex was organized on 8 December 2020 under the efficient Chairmanship of Mr. Tribhuvan Darbari, Chairman CII Aerospace & Defence Subcommittee (ER) & Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Texmaco Defence Systems Private Limited (TDSPL) & Chief Executive, Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited.
At the outset of the event, Mr. Tribhuvan Darbari addressed the session. In his address, Mr. Tribhuvan Darbari highlighted the initiative of the Indian government to promote ‘Make in India‘ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat‘.
Mr. TS Darbari said, “Defence being one of the important sectors, the capability to produce defence equipment is an important strategic requirement for India. Huge resources are being allotted to strengthen this capability. The sector is pitching for joint venture partnerships in defence technologies and manufacturing.
For decades, aerospace and defense (A&D) companies have been early, ambitious adopters of advanced technologies such as stealth, composites, and computer-aided design. Much of this innovation occurred in response to customer demand.”
Highlighting the initiatives of the central government, Mr. TS Darbari further said, “India plans to spend $130 billion on military modernization in the next 5 years, as achieving self-reliance in defence production is a key target for the Government of India. The Government has opened the Defence industry for private sector participation to provide impetus to indigenous manufacturing.”
Discussing the importance and requirement of digitization and high-end customized technology, Mr. TS Darbari said, “When we consider modernization & innovation, Fourth Industrial Revolution or more commonly known as ‘Industry 4.0’ is basically an approach that improves operational efficiency and organizational growth.
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (4.0) envisages the fusion of technologies across the physical, digital and biological worlds, and is transforming production, management and governance into a Smart Manufacturing paradigm. It is based on the exploitation of current and futuristic technologies such as the Internet of Things, 3D Printing (Additive Manufacturing), 5 G connectivity, cybersecurity, robotics and automation. More than any other industry, defence innovation and manufacturing demand high quality and precision products.
Advanced automation techniques like safety monitoring, maintenance and repair diagnostics, error detection and recovery are being used worldwide in order to enhance efficiency, productivity and nullify errors.
With the extensive use of technology, Indian manufacturers can not only meet international quality benchmarks but also strengthen their position as competent suppliers for the global market. The digitalization of the manufacturing industry is crucial not only to boost domestic revenue and the country’s GDP but also to drive significant growth in job creation.”
As a Chairman of the CII Aerospace & Defence Subcommittee (ER), Mr. TS Darbari also shared the initiatives of CII in the digitalization of various sectors. Mr. Tribhuvan Darbari said, “CII has always played a significant role in promoting digitalization across sectors. It has always focused on the need for creating a top to bottom digital culture, forthcoming business challenges, the importance of upskilling for building sustainable businesses of tomorrow and much more.
CII has been actively involved the digitalization drive for the defence sector and has always been instrumental in empowering the sector with the latest developments in digital transformation.”
In his closing remark, Mr. TS Darbari said, “In continuation with the same, today’s’ session on “Session on Smart Factory to improve Manufacturing Agility by Digitization of Design and Manufacturing exclusively for MiG Complex would focus on realistic measures in digitalization which may be taken at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. This would provide the necessary impetus for enhancing the performance of the entire manufacturing process of HAL MiG Complex.”

Collaboration can include: comprehensive upgrade of the MiG 29 UPG and MiG29K/KUB aircraft, setting up of the manufacturing ecosystem and supply chain for future requirements.
