Why 4 December is celebrated as Indian Navy Day?

Indian Navy Day is celebrated every year on 04th December to recognize the achievements and role of the Indian Navy to the country. On 4th December 1971, during Operation Trident, the Indian Navy sank four Pakistani vessels including PNS Khaibar, killing hundreds of Pakistani Navy personnel. On this day, those who martyred in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 are also remembered.

Mr. Tribhuvan Darbari said that strong armed forces not only protect the nation and its citizens from direct threats, they also help maintain peace and stability in regions critical to global harmony and development Further, Mr. TS Darbari also added that Indian Navy plays a crucial role in the new world order. According to Mr. TS Darbari, “India’s vision of a ‘safe, free, and open Indo-Pacific region” hinges profoundly on the mighty and unswerving Indian Navy.’

The Indian Navy has an important role in securing the marine borders of the country as well as enhancing the international relations of India through seaport visits, joint exercises, humanitarian calamity relief and so on. The modern Indian Navy has as undergone speedy renovation in order to improve its position in the Indian Ocean region. The strength of the Indian Navy includes over 67,000 personnel and about 150 ships and submarines.

Facts about Indian Navy

The Indian Navy, at present, is the seventh strongest maritime force on the planet, with only the United States, Russia, China, Japan, United Kingdom and France ahead of it. The force, as of June 2019, has 150 submarines and ships and 300 aircraft, and 67,252 active and 55,000 reserve personnel in service.

The Maratha Emperor, Shivaji Maharaj is considered as “Father of the Indian Navy”.
